Isaac an 18 year old male student from Kapkono and studying at Kimwarer Secondary School was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2009. He was then operated and again operated in 2014. In October 2015 the doctors realized a recurrence of the tumor and referred him to Cancer Care Centre MP Shah Hospital Nairobi for specialized treatment.

Coming from a very humble background and parents struggling to fend for their siblings, the family could not afford the cost of treatment that amounted to a total of over Ksh. 420,000/= ( Four Hundred and twenty thousand) being medical, travel, food and accommodation costs for patient and a care giver for a period of 6 weeks.

The family approached the company for assistance and this was acceded to in the spirit of caring for its needy neighbors and in line with the Company social responsibility priorities. The Company therefore fully funded his treatment in Nairobi.

The boy successfully completed the radiotherapy treatment on 5th January 2016 and came home stronger with great improvement on his health. He is equally very optimistic of full recovery and eventual resumption of his studies which was suspended due to poor health in the mid of his KCSE exams 2015.

The Company is encouraged of the positive development on his health and wish him well.

Field Marsham Medical centre, Kenya Fluorspar Company limited, in partnership with Medcan Naweza team from Canada and department of Ophthalmology Elgeyo Marakwet County organized a series of free Medical services to the community within Kenya Fluorspar mines for the month of October 2015.

The services were as follows;

  1. Eye screening exercises within health facilities at the valley
  2. Cataract surgeries
  3. Cervical cancer screening
  4. Chronic diseases screening through community health workers
  5. Continuous Medical Education to medical staff at FMMC by Medcan.

The above activities commenced with a one day social mobilization along the valley covering 8 health facilities and a distance of approximately 50 km.

The exercises were aimed at identifying patients with eye cataracts who required surgical interventions. During these exercises 330 patients were seen of which 49 had cataracts and were booked for surgeries, whilst others were treated for eye infections and eye tests.

Cataract Surgeries

The cataract surgeries were performed at the FMMC facility on 9th and 10th October 2015 where one of the rooms was sterilised and converted to a full theatre.

The surgeons and assistants were contracted from the Elgeyo Marakwet county health department headed by Agnes Maiyo. (County ophthalmology department in charge and cataract surgeon)

A total of 39 cases of cataract surgeries were performed on the two days with the majority of cases being elderly people whilst 1 case was of a 15 year old girl- who had a congenital cataract. Post operation checkups were performed and appears all operations were successful.

Cervical Cancer Screening

During the period 9th -13th October, 2015 more than 90 patients were screen for cervical cancer and breast cancer as well. One positive case was identified and treated with cryotherapy (involved freezing of the suspected cells).

Chronic disease screening by Community Health workers.

The Medcan Naweza Team, have been on the forefront to facilitate chronic disease screening within the valley.

This project commenced in 2014involving an SMS service and a system that transmits the analysed information and provides feedback on the risk status of a patient based on age, sex, blood pressure, whether diabetic nor smoker and other criteria. Feedback is based on the WHO classification for cardiovascular disease risk estimated for the next 10years.

The project has been made possible by the recruitment of community health workers who move from house to house to screen for chronic diseases. The Community Health Workers are issued with blood pressure machines and sufficient credit to transmit the information via an sms system and receive instant feedback allowing them to advise patients accordingly.

To date since the initiation of this program in April 2015, more than 1 000 patients have been screened and less than 1% are at risk.

This programme is currently carried out by 4 community health workers 3 at fluorspar and 1 at Lewa Conservancy.

Continuous medical education for staff by Medcan

There has been continuous medical education at the facility since partnering with Medcan Naweza Team, whose mission is to support our facility and community within to preventing and managing chronic diseases based on WHO standards.

During this period we had the following areas covered by different specialities:

Nutrition and dietetic, obstetrics and gynaecology ,eye clinics , paediatric reviews & chronic diseases courses as well as the introduction of Community Health Workers.

Diabetes is one of the common chronic illnesses causing frequent hospital visits and hospital admissions in our communities. Kenya Fluorspar Company management through the Field Marsham Medical Centre has continued with its approach to address the problem.

The company has in the previous year (2013) donated 10 blood sugar testing machines (glucometers) plus glucose test strips to diabetic patients who were treated at the health facility previously. These patients have been on routine follow up visits to the Medical Centre and receive appropriate treatment based on their home results. They benefit from diabetic drugs as well as refill of glucose test strips.

To date the Company through the Managing Director has donated 20 glucometers and glucose test strips to various diabetic clients within the community during the past 18 months whereby 10 were donated late 2012 and 10 recently in May 2014.

Recently, the Medical Centre conducted Diabetic Education Training to the 20 recipients of test kits advising them of the causes and treatment of diabetes as well as promoting a healthy life style and also covering the following topics:

  1. Introduction, definition and types of diabetes;
  2. Diabetes presentations (signs and symptoms) and complications associated with diabetes;
  3. Causes and prevention of diabetes (meals and lifestyle factors );
  4. Testing procedures (self testing), interpretation of results and what to do when they find abnormal blood sugar ranges;
  5. Treatment and management of diabetes complications ;
  6. Feeding habits and nutrition considerations in patients with diabetes;
  7. Special situations and interventions involving hospital contact in cases of emergencies.

On 16 May 2014 a total of 10 glucometer machines were donated to new clients and 20 gluco strip kits to previous patients on follow up visit.

The diabetic sufferers were encouraged to spread the message on diabetes and perform tests on other community members they suspect may be suffering from this disease. Through this initiative we hope to create awareness of diabetes and at the same time reach out to more sufferers and assist them.

Below are some pictures of the ceremony where the test kits were handed out.

Susan Kiplagat , daughter of one of the Company’s security employees, was diagnosed with a life threatening heart defect late last year.

Her remaining life span was estimated to be 5 years unless she underwent an operation at a specialized unit in Delhi, India. Following checks and planning through the Field-Marsham Medical Centre, we managed to secure an invitation from the Apollo Medical Centre in Delhi inviting her for an operation to rectify the problem.

She will be accompanied by her mother, Tecla Maina, and they will depart for India on 13 April 2014.

The Company is sponsoring the cost of the air tickets, operation and after care that totals to about 12,000$ (Kes 1 million).

Below are a few pictures with the Managing Director handing over the air tickets and vouchers to Susan in the presence of her parents and the Company’s HR manager, Charles Korir.

World Aids Day was celebrated on Sunday 01 December 2013 with the KFC Medical Team setting up facilities at the local sports grounds offering free HIV counseling and testing.

Each person that subjected him/her to a voluntary HIV testing received a T-shirt as well as a soda and something small to eat.

A total of 624 people turned up for testing and the results were extremely encouraging.

In addition to the free testing, the Medical team counseled people on HIV/AIDS in terms of causes, prevention and the treatment thereof. People were encouraged to have themselves tested regularly and that there is no stigma attached to it and that it is just another disease that has to be treated.

Three health care workers from Muskut Health Centre supported the day and did commendable work in counseling and testing.

A volunteer from the community who is trained on HIV/AIDS testing and counseling also assisted in this day. The County Representative was also in attendance and read the World AIDS Day speech on behalf of the Governor of Elgeiyo-Marakwet.

It was a very successful event and the day was fully sponsored by Kenya Fluorspar Company.

At the beginning of April the Company embarked on a community service project by providing free basic medical care and clinics to three Communities every week.

The outreach program reaches communities about 17 km away from medical care and this project greatly assists as they do not have to foot the long distances to get to proper care and we can diagnose and assist in treatment of an issue before it is too late.

In additional to basic medical service and examinations the following clinics are presented:

  • Children Welfare Clinic ;
  • Antenatal Clinic ;
  • Family Planning;
  • Nutrition(Malnourished children);
  • HIV/AIDS testing and clinics.

During these outreach programs basic drugs are prescribed and cases are followed up on a weekly basis. In the event of any serious diagnosis the relevant action is recommended and patients referred for specialist care should it be required.

The outreach program assists approximately 1 000 patients monthly in addition to the approximate total of 800 that visit the Field-Marsham Medical Centre. In total our service reaches nearly 2 000 people monthly and we are still exploring the options to expand to one more community.

Below we have posted some pictures of elderly and other patients that visit the clinics.

Saturday 15 December was a happy occasion at the Field-Marsham Medical Centre following the Company’s decision to donate Glucometers, test kits and medication to a number of patients who suffer from Diabetes.Some of these patients have been frequenting the Medical Centre for as long as 8 years to have their sugar levels tested and receive appropriate medication.

The Company has decided to donate Glucometers, as well as supply of test strips for one year and appropriate medication to the sufferers. This equipment will allow them to test their sugar levels in the comfort of their homes and save the time and energy of travelling a substantial distance to have them tested every time. The patients will maintain records of their tests and still visit the Medical Centre on a monthly basis to have a follow up Medical check done by the Clinical Officer.

This is another first by the Company in an effort to reach out to community members assisting them in monitoring their medical conditions but also allow them to take control of their own health and monitoring thereof.

Present at the ceremony were Joanne Tanui, Clinical Officer and Moses Chebon, the Laboratory Technician. Moses spent some time after the ceremony educating the patients in the use of their new devices.
